I have set the timing on over a hundred small blocks, and rebuilt many a classic chevy, for a time it is what I did for a living. This is a THREE part guide on how to set the initial timing. I am very repetitive, and go slowly over this process. Find top Dead Center of your #1 cylinder, line up your rotor with a cap tower, that tower is number one. Run spark plug wire from #1 tower to #1 cylinder, then go around the cap from there. This is for Chevy small blocks, the order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Hopefully this helps someone. Thanks for viewing. For those of who you watched all three and want to tell me I am wrong, this won't set TDC, make a video of your own, tell me how you set TDC, if you use a vacuum gauge it's the same thing as feeling the piston stroke your just watching gauge tell you where you at versus a dowel or wire. And I am going to start deleting, wait I have deleted some already, comments that state the advance for certain engines. Cam, Dizzy, and vacuum advance cannisters, will change what you should set the advance at! So don't tell everyoneto set thier 350 at X, when with a bigger cam X won't be right. Or maybe I'm just stupid. Motor cranks solidly. It STARTS to kick over but dies. Depressing the accelerator gets a harder attempt to kick but then backfiring through the intake manifold. Fuel pressure is at 43psi (spec needs 35-45) and injectors all read good resistance AND are receiving signal. Every spark plug fires (new NGK Platinum). Parts changed: Coil (old was weak, orange spark, lots of carbon deposits) Wires (all cylinders PLUS coil to distributor, done for safety) Distributor cap (done for safety) Rotor (done for safety) All 8 plugs (including the two joyful guys under the brake manifold, old ones were badly worn) Crankshaft position sensor (this morning, wasted...) I've verified no buildup on the MAF sensor. Spark rhythm indicates proper cam position sensor operation. New plugs have the typical black coating you see from being way rich, which is how we determined the crankshaft position sensor (bad sensor reads high RPM, hence longer signal to injectors). This thing ran fine, even a 500 mile trip last month for my Grandmother's funeral. No issues. Then one day it was hard to start (had to hit the gas), but once it started it ran fine, but you could smell it was running rich. Next day, same thing, hard to start, and then when we were getting ready to move the crew home, it took five minutes to get it started. Once started, rich, but ran fine (no stalling or acceleration issues). Once it got home, it just wouldn't start at all, and I started replacing parts.

2003 Nissan Altima S 2.5LW/Automatic Transmission PROBLEM: INTERMITTENT NO-STARTS & ROUGH-STARTS WITH NO DTCs SET. A LOCAL AUTOSHOP HAD REPLACED ONLY THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR, MADE SURE NO DTCs PRESENT AND OPS CHECK GOOD. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM RETURNED. NOW, THE SAME AUTOSHOP BELIEVES THAT THE FAULT IS WITH THE TRANSMISSION FLEX PLATE, WHICH MAY HAVE DAMAGED THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR AS WELL, ACCORDING TO HIM. ESTIMATE IS AT ~0. The mechanic didn't try to replace the Crankshaft sensor alone, he went straight for the Tranny drop. I figured go with the cheap fix first. If it comes back, then we will look into the Flex Plate. I replaced the recently replaced Camshaft sensor & the never been replaced Crankshaft sensor. So far, so good. Replacing the Camshaft sensor is a 2-minute job. The Crankshaft sensor will likely take 30 times as long. It seems like the Old Crankshaft Position sensor I removed was a bit high on a resistance check, when compared to brand new sensors. With too high a resistance value, the sensor may not make use of the full voltage it is receiving and/or it may not return the required amount of voltage to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), which will lead to irregular engine operation or a no-start condition. Both Camshaft & Crankshaft sensors are the same part number. The 3rd version of the sensor is encased in metal, not plastic. The OEM part number is 23731-6N21A ( us) The old part numbers were encased in plastic. These part numbers ...
